I.M. Sechenov First Moscow State Medical University is the first and the oldest medical higher education institution in Russia tracing its history from the medical faculty opened in 1758 at the Moscow Imperial University (nowadays Lomonosov Moscow State University). In 2013, the oldest Russian medical school celebrated its 255th anniversary.

Today the University is a major centre for training, certification and upgrading medical personnel and pharmacists, recognized leader of innovation in medical education. The university provides a diverse and inclusive environment that fosters intellectual discovery, creates and transmits innovative knowledge, improves human health, and provides medical leadership in the Russian healthcare system.

There are 69 buildings for studies, 19 teaching hospitals with over 3,000 beds, 7 university research institutes and bases of 5 research centers for the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS), more than 30 laboratories, the biggest medical library in Europe, own botanic garden, and many other facilities that provide a world-level professional environment for academic excellence combined with spectacular results in research and innovation, as well as high quality medical treatment.

The University staff includes 107 members of the Russian Academy of Sciences and over 100 laureates of the Russian State Prize, the President and Government Prizes. More than 13,800 Russian and around 1,800 international undergraduate students study at the university.

MSMU offers international students higher professional education in a wide variety of majors related to medicine:
Specialist Programs

  • General Medicine (English Medium) – 6-year course
  • Dentistry (English Medium) – 5-year course
  • Pharmacy (English and French Medium) – 5-year course

Postgraduate training is an integral part of medical education. First MSMU provides Postgraduate Training as over 60 departments in Internship (internatura) – 1 year, clinical residency (ordinatura) – 2-3years, PhD courses (aspirantura) – 3-4 years and the doctorate (D.Sc. fellowships or doktorantura) – 3-4 years.

Most postgraduate courses and programs are conducted in Russian (10 most prestigious programs – in English).

First MSMU has built strong and close relations with many foreign educational establishments, public and international organizations, including faculty and student exchange with major universities in Austria, Bulgaria, China, France, Germany, Japan, Norway, Serbia, Slovenia, USA, CIS countries, etc., as well as World Health Organization, International Association of Universities and others.

In 2015 First MSMU won an open tender and became the only medical university of the Russian Federation included in the “5/100 program” of state support of the country’s leading universities in order to enhance their competitiveness among the world’s leading research and education centers.
